Germany at once divided along political lines before being united by the Reunification process. Thomas friedman's quote from THE WORLD IS FLAT spring to mind: "The walls went down and the windows came up." (pg 49) This, of course meaning that access to information and thus more ways of communicating across platforms became possible, including memes.
